For me, this is a must-have in the garden. This variety of fennel, Foeniculum vulgare ‘Giant Bronze’, sends up fresh, frothy foliage in the spring. Easy to grow from seed and may self-seed, though watch for slugs and snails early in spring, as they think it as delicious as we do (add young, aniseed-tasting leaves to salads and fish dishes). Most of all, the texture, colour and stature (up to 6ft tall) of this plant makes it a great foil for other tall plants such as Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’, Verbena bonariensis, Gaura ‘Whirling Butterflies’ or bright dahlias. Try it!
